CAVE
acrylic, enamel, graphite, drawing on gallery wall
2012

Site-specific wall drawing by Julie McNiel at the HSU First Street Gallery

In the lower right are three bear skulls, and scattered around and within this portal of yellow, almost urine-colored paint, are the notorious red spots. This drawing was inspired by Herzog's film, Cave of Forgotten Dreams which tells the tale of the ancient Chauvet Caves of Southern France. These contain some of the world's oldest known drawings, perhaps 30,000 years old.
