Trainyard Dryad
ink, acrylic, xerox collage on paper.
1991

I loved to wander through the trainyards and industrial areas in the East Bay with my friends, a 35mm camera and my super-8, taking footage with black and white film. This would be later xeroxed and collaged into images, like this one. Greek and Celtic myths and icons, were an influence at the time, and I sometimes applied gold leaf into sections of my images. Dryads are specifically associated with oak trees. California has more than twenty native species of oaks. Living in Oakland in the 1980s-90s provided me with the opportunity to have cheap rent and watch a landscape go through enormous transition.
