Lion Dog
Lion Dog
Ink, joss paper, watercolor, acrylic, collage, on paper.
1990

My sister lived in a Kowloon apartment, an area of Hong Kong. At night, the sound of racing motorcycles could be heard up in the steep hills. On visits to see her, I would ask about the street alters, temples, brothels, and mythic figures perched on rooftops and by doorways. Lion Dogs are guardians of doorways, defenders against marauding ghosts. However, my Lion Dog had a quite different significance.

While walking the streets, I'd pick up debris, ephemera.... then later collage it on to paper, book pages or wood, and paint or draw into it.
