I first started traveling further north from the San Francisco Bay Area, in the 1990s, to escape the grind of city life. With a backpack and sleeping bag, I roamed such places as this, the wild Mattole, in the Lost Coast region of far northern coastal California. At night, constellations could be clearly viewed due to lack of artificial lighting, and the only sounds came from the restless sea.
