drawing by Julie McNiel
Unfortunate Literary Influences
graphite on manila paper
18 x 24"
2001

This was one of many improvisational pencil drawings made in the late 1990s, early 2000s. I had a daily practice of setting out a few sheets of manila paper and just staring into the paper's surface until I had the sensation of being inside the paper space. A room, with a view, and my hand, with a pencil. One line led to another, and such un-planned images as this one would emerge.

Because I never pre-planned such drawings, and did not allow myself the use of an eraser, it took concentration, but only for a short period of time. It took all of about five minutes to draw this. Sometimes certain aspects of the finished drawing were satisfactory to me, but because of my own rules, other aspects appeared awkward or unresolved. Results were always unpredictable.
