Drawing by Julie McNiel
Sky Horse
ink, acrylic, xerox, on paper.
1989

Like a fallen Pegasus, this Sky Horse happened due to an accident. I'd begun the drawing with entirely different intentions. While drawing, my hand bumped against the bottle of black ink, spilling it across the paper. Like a Rorschach Test gone awry, my careful hours of detailed color pencil drawing were eradicated in a blink. The initial frustration passed, and I then saw an opportunity to make something new. After the ink had dried, I drew the horse across it's surface with a white pencil, and the painted horse emerged.
